Importance of Prison Visit

  1. Themis School of Law prides itself as one of the pioneer institutes to initiate the practical legal skills course on the UOL LLB Programme. As part of our Practical Legal Skills Centre, our students are not only exposed to the different courts such as the High Court and Supreme Court but are also exposed to the prisons to ensure that they witness the actual and concluding sight of justice.
  2. The importance of visiting prisons during law school cannot be overstated. By exposing students to prisons, they benefit in the following ways:
  • Exposure to the actual purpose of prison as a correctional facility.
  • Understanding the aim of custodial sentence and students can independently assess whether it is achieving its true purpose.
  • Exposure to the facilities of the prison, its infrastructure and the various rehabilitative opportunities provided to the inmates as opposed to a complete lockdown
  • Exposing students to prisons helps in reducing the stigma and creates a realistic image of prison facilities and life of inmates as opposed to what is broadcasted by media
  • Routine visits especially of law students creates a sense of responsibility for those in charge of these prisons
